Fever Update - Recovered

Brought AN to the doctor early this morning.

She woke us up crying, coz I 'scolded' her for biting my nxxxxe when she was suckling. It was a gentle "ouch" and she began her drama-crying.

We took her temperature and saw it high at 38.6 deg cel. This is the 3rd day, so we decided to dress up and go.

Everyone must be wondering why we did not bring her to the doctor till now. We had medicine from Dr Tan and saw that her temperature seemed to be under control after giving her the medications. The higher temperatures came only during her sleep each time. Just when we want to bring her to the doctor's, the fever's gone again.

Mr Liow's colleagues with kids, all came with advises to wait a couple of day before bringing her to doctor coz doctors here will simply prescribe medications and do not really tell you what was wrong with her. Some said their kids can have fever up to 5days! Virus attack, they say.

To me, they will not be liable if anything happens to AN. I really appreciate their assurances that AN is not in any life threatening danger but at the same time, her fever may indicate infections. Told myself that we have to decide to bring her and not only rely on advises, sound as they may be. It's up to our discretion, whether or not to wait till something bad really happens.

We have to make appointments to see the PD and I doubt we'll be patient enough to wait any longer. Thus the trip to the hospital was necessary. By the way, there are no clinics here, so it's either the PD, or hospital.

AN was 102.2 deg F when they took her temperature in the hospital. The nurse asked if we want to give her Tylenol coz I thought I had been feeding her Tylenol all these while. Mr Liow and I both thought that if Tylenol didn't seem effective enough, we would prefer she get something else so she gave her Motrin.

She was brought to a room and we waited for a Doctor to attend to us. He checked AN for symptoms of anything more than plain fever, asked if we noticed her scratching her ears or nose (as an indication of infection either in the ears or nose), if she's been eating well, diarrhoe or vomitting etc. Not really. She did throw up a few times and in the car at the car park of the hospital (we think she threw up coz of the bumpy ride in addition to her feeling unwell). I forgot to tell the Doctor that she DID throw up during meals. hmm..

He says she's well and that we were right to bring her in this morning. Sometimes fever doesn't last more than a day (true for AN..her fever from vaccinations never lasted more than a day) and if it does, we should seek help.

BUT...

The rest of the story was exactly like what Mr Liow's colleague advised. He did not prescribe her medicines and said that if AN still doesn't recover on Tylenol, we can get Motrin from the Pharmacy (any pharmacy. The practice here is such that they will give a prescription and then you get the medications from any pharmacy out there.)

Another thing was, I provided wrong information to the healthcare workers who treated AN just now. hee. AN wasn't on Tylenol as I thought. She was on Progesic from Dr Tan. hee.

Anyway, we came back by 9am and AN slept (is Motrin that strong?) till 1pm. She's recovered, just like that. hmm... Her body temperature since we returned did not go any higher than 37 deg cel, not even during sleep or after she woke up.

Sound magical right? Both Mr Liow and I felt that Doctors almost always have this power to heal people so that they recover soon after their patients see them, whether or not they take medicines they prescribe.

And hor, here ah, it's not important whether we see a doctor or not. The important thing is to always have medicines readily available at home. Seems like those who've been here long enough, no longer see the doctor much since the doctors say the same things all the time. When one is here long enough, one becomes a self-taught pharmacist.

Scary right?
