Feel quite bad about feeling THAT upset..sigh..
Have removed the previous post and will not let it bother me anymore (or put Mr Liow in a difficult position. He's been really understanding and I shldn't push it too far. hee).
AN will be seeing her PD tomorrow for her 2nd flu shot and weight gain review.
Pray that it'll be good news.
She's been showing symptoms of cold since 3 days back and woke up crying for the 1st 2 nights coz she couldn't breathe comfortably and choked on what seemed like phlegm. Poor baby..I couldn't bear to put her down and so carried her to sleep the whole night till about 4am when her breathing passage seemed to have cleared up a little.
I propped her up a little last night so that she could breath a little better and she managed to sleep well. When she sleeps well, I do too :)
And she sounded fine during the day since yesterday (no sneezing, no coughing, no blocked nose).
Mr Liow's colleagues said it could be allergy. His own girl's those same symptoms too lately.
I do pray so.
Some facts I found out about colds from here:
- Sneezing ejects virus from nose
- Coughing ejects virus from lungs and throat
- Vomitting ejects virus form stomach
- Diarrhea ejects virus from intestines
- Fever makes it difficult for virus to reproduce
- Colds can occur whole year round but mostly during winter or rainy seasons
- Children average 3-8 colds/ year
Natural remedies
- Chicken soup
- Heat
- Hydration
- Buckwheat honey: calms cough caused by common cold; 1/2 tsp for children 2-5 yrs old. ALL FORMS OF HONEY ARE NOT RECOMMENDED FOR INFANTS UNDER AGE 1 DUE TO RISK OF INFANT BOTULISM.
Ways to decrease germ exposure & number of colds
- Handwashing: esp after nose wiping, diapering/toileting, before meals/ food preparation and if possible, before the child picks his/her nose (might be easy for us coz AN is a compulsive nose picker. I just have to keep washing her hands?!)
- Instant hand sanitizer (Our new best friend from now on)
- Disinfection: Clean commonly touched surfaces with EPA-approved (what's that??) disinfectant.
- Paper towels
Prevention of colds by improving immunity system:
- Avoid unnecessary antibiotics/ antibiotic soaps: The more kids use antibiotics, the more likely they are to get sick with longer, more stubborn infections caused by more resistant organisms (what a mouthful...)
- Breastfeeding: BM is known to pretect against upper & lower respiratory tract infections even years after BF-ing is done (good news for me...except that weaning AN OFF the breasts is even more tedious than it was putting her ON them.)
- Cigarette smoke: Exposure to 2nd-hand smoke is responsible for many health problems, even colds.
- Sleep: Late bedtimes & poor sleep leave kids vulnerable
- Water: Plenty of fluids support immune function
- Yogurt: Beneficial baterias in active yogurt cultures help prevent colds (and tummyaches, diarrhea, food-poisoning/allergies, ezema, sinus infections, bronchitis & pneumonia etc etc)..sounds like good news coz I've started to give AN yogurt at least every day, if not alternate and Thank God she likes yogurt!!
- Zinc: Kids who are zinc-deficient get more infections and stay sick longer
The end. (^____-)
